Summer is nearly here, and like other Nashville residents, you may be anxious to enjoy some warm-weather fun with your family. There are plenty of outdoor toys, games and equipment that can make your summer memorable, but some may cause harm to you or your children. At Bart Durham Injury Law, we realize how a defect in the design of certain products can cause lasting physical harm.
If you grew up in the 1970s through the early 1990s, you might have played with such summer toys as the Slip ‘n Slide, lawn darts and several types of water hose attachments meant to make running through the sprinklers more fun. Some of these products were recalled in the 1980s and 1990s because they had been responsible for numerous injuries. Lawn darts had been among the most hazardous of these popular outdoor toys. According to AOL, toy companies have redesigned many of these products to be safer, and they should be available this summer.
As welcome as this news might be to your family, you should understand that new toys become available on the market all the time, and some may not have been properly designed or thoroughly tested for safety. A recent list of the most dangerous children’s toys included some that had small parts that might break off and cause a choking hazard, as well as toys with projectile pieces that could injure eyes or cause choking. A small trampoline meant to fold up quickly was also said to have caused injuries.
It is smart to inspect new toys before allowing your children to play with them, and to look for damage or design defects that could present a hazard. Age-appropriate supervision is also recommended.
