In today’s modern, health-conscious age, a growing number of people are walking to and from work, school and other destinations.
If you decide to take this approach, you need to become familiar with the many ways of enhancing your safety.
Here are some of the many things you can do to prevent a serious pedestrian accident:
- Stay alert at all times. Don’t make the mistake of texting or talking on your phone while you walk. It may not sound like a big deal, but it can take your attention away from what’s going on around you.
- Know the rules of the road. Just the same as drivers, there are rules that govern what you are and are not allowed to do as a pedestrian. For instance, you should do your best to cross the road at a crosswalk.
- Use the sidewalk when possible. You may be tempted to walk elsewhere, such as on the shoulder of the road, but this increases the risk of an accident.
- Don’t drink too much alcohol. If you drink an excessive amount of alcohol, you may not be able to make informed decisions when walking.
As a pedestrian, these are a few of the many things you can do to avoid a serious accident. While there is no guarantee that you will avoid trouble, these tips should be able to help.
If you are part of an accident despite your best efforts, don’t hesitate to call 911. By doing this, you know that immediate help will arrive at the scene. Once you receive treatment, you’ll then want to learn more about the cause of the accident and your legal rights.
