In an overall sense, it’s easy to understand the risks associated with distracted driving. Even so, some people make the mistake of losing focus when they’re behind the wheel.

There are many things that can result in distracted driving, including but not limited to, the following:

  • Daydreaming. Your mind begins to wander as you travel down the road, causing you to pay less attention to the task at hand.
  • Cellphone use. From texting to talking, there are many forms of cellphone use that can distract you.
  • Outside events, objects or people. A common example of this is staring at an accident on the shoulder of the road, as opposed to worrying about controlling your vehicle.
  • Conversing with passengers. It can be difficult to remain focused with other people in your vehicle, especially if they want to talk.
  • Reaching for something in your vehicle. Many accidents occur as drivers attempt to reach for something while driving, such as that piece of fruit that slipped under your seat.
  • Adjusting vehicle controls. From the radio station to the GPS, making adjustments when your car is in motion is a big no-no.
  • Eating or drinking. It’s easy to believe you can save time by eating a meal or drinking a beverage in your car, but the practice also increases the likelihood of an accident.

These are the types of things that can cause a distracted driving accident. You should do whatever it takes to avoid this type of trouble on the road. Also, other drivers may be making these mistakes, so keep an eye on them.
