There have been numerous headlines about the sale of millions of Volkswagen and Audi diesel vehicles fitted with software that intentionally altered the vehicles’ emissions results during official testing. Our team of experienced and knowledgeable attorneys at Bart Durham Injury Law is investigating claims on behalf of owners of these recalled vehicles. If you or a family member purchased one of these vehicles, you may be entitled to compensation.
Manipulating The System
The vehicles were outfitted with engine computer software that was able to recognize when an official emissions test was being conducted. When the software detected that the vehicle was undergoing testing, it turned on all emission control systems in the vehicle. As a result, the test equipment registered low amounts of pollutants. The software also turned off the emission control systems during normal driving, so that drivers experienced better fuel economy and performance.
When the systems are turned off, however, the cars emit much higher levels of pollution than Volkswagen and Audi advertised, levels not permitted under the state and federal laws in the United States. Since many consumers purchased the vehicles because they were touted as being environmentally friendly, some owners are now looking to hold the manufacturers accountable for their actions.
